To reveal, or not to reveal
April 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment
When it comes to planning a wedding (or any event for that matter) many brides wonder if they should reveal there colors or theme by incorporating them into the invitations. While I can appreciate the element of suprise for your special day, keep in mind that the invitation is a preview of what’s to come. You don’t have to reveal every design detail of your wedding, but your invitation is an attention grabber and sets the tone and scene for the occasion. So don’t be afraid or apprehensive to include elements of your theme and colors in your wedding invites. In some cases, brides have different themes for the various events that take place throughout the engagement period. For example, the engagement party invites may have one theme and the bridesmaids brunch a completely different one, and then the wedding may have a totally different theme. Either way, don’t be afraid to give your guests a taste of what to expect.

I’m having a lot of fun working on a new project for a potential client. My creative juices are flowing and this project reminds me how much I love the couture designed invitations that are tailored to my customers needs. It’s so fun to bring a vision to fruition. I’ll share the completed project with you once it’s finished. In the mean time, here’s a sneak peek:

Invitation 101: Planning for Postage
March 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Postage is an important element to consider when planning your wedding or event budget, and once again the United States Postal service is raising their rates on first class postage. Effective May 11, 2009 a first class stamp will cost you 44¢. Whether you plan on mailing out your invites yourself or leaving that up to your invitationer, it is important to note in your budget, after all, every penny counts these days. Don’t forget that the “Forever” stamps are just that, their value remains forever the same even when the price of postage goes up.

An important tip that you may not know about is to take your invitations to the Post Office and ask them to manually stamp them. Otherwise they will be run through the mail with every other piece of mail. Why does it matter? Invitations tend not to be completely flat - it may have multiple folds, inserts, or embellishments that can rip when run through the postage machine. So be sure to hand carry them to your post office to make this extra special request. Happy mailing!

Répondez, s’il vous plait
February 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Répondez, s’il vous plait, or Please Respond, is an essential element of the invitation ensemble. It is important to include an rsvp card, most commonly referred to as a response card, with invitations for your event in order to keep track of the number of guests that will be attending and to help you plan your budget. However, sometimes guests are not all too diligent on returning the response card. Therefore, the return process must be as simple as possible. The response card should be included with the invitation as a separate insert for guests to mail back to you. Make sure the wording and instructions are straight forward and clear. It is an absolute must to include a respond by date, as well as include a return envelope that already includes postage on it and a return address label.

House of Papier attends New York Fashion Week…Part VII

Inspiration No° 6: Fabulous Fashion
While I’ve been inspired by individual elements of New York Fashion Week. The truth of the matter is that just being under the tents in Bryant Park was in and of itself an inspiring experience. I’m often asked why House of Papier is so closely linked to fashion. After all what do invitations and fashion have to do with one another? Right? The answer is, nothing. For me it’s about style. As far as I’m concerned style exceeds the boundaries of fashion and extends to creativity, patterns, colors, ideas, design, and texture. I always go back to my favorite quote by Coco Chanel:

Inspiration No° 5: Miss Sixty Patent Leather Bubble Jacket

Miss Sixty Show - Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2009
Black is back for the Fall & Winter. I fell in love with this patent leather jacket/dress number. As beautiful and feminine as this outfit is, it actually gave me an idea for a masculine invitation design. House of Papier has always marketed it’s products to women and I have struggled with coming up with designs that men would feel comfortable with purchasing for an event. So it’s somewhat of an oxymoron that such a beautiful ensemble on a beautiful female model has inspired me to create a masculine design. Keep following the House of Papier blog and I’ll share it with you as soon as I create it.

Inspiration No° 4: Miss Sixty Wide Buckled Belts

Miss Sixty Show - Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall 2009
Another show I attended during the New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is the Miss Sixty Show. In addition to the eccentric ensembles, the accessories in this show were fabulous and artistically inspiring. I love these wide buckled belts and hope to incorporate the concept into an invitation design.
